Reflection
This section of the course summarises the content covered so far. It is also an opportunity
for you to reflect on your current practice.

High-quality teaching (HQT) that is differentiated and personalised will meet the individual
needs of the majority of children and young people.
HQT is about the day-to-day interactions that take place in the classroom and the different
pedagogical approaches used to engage, motivate and challenge pupils.
HQT is about the way teachers use assessment and feedback to identify gaps and help
pupils to move on in their learning. It is about providing both support and challenge in
order to enable pupils to achieve more.
HQT and SEN
For children with Special Educational Needs, high-quality teaching underpins special educational provision and is compromised by anything less.
HQT, differentiated for individual pupils, is the first step in responding to pupils who have or may have SEN too. Additional intervention and support cannot compensate for a lack of good quality teaching. Schools should regularly and carefully review the quality of teaching for all pupils, including those at risk of underachievement. This includes reviewing and, where necessary, improving, teachers’ understanding of strategies to identify and support vulnerable pupils and their knowledge of the SEN most frequently encountered.
ACTIVITY 1
The “Activity – Audit of Practice” document (see materials section to download) provides a framework for lesson observations and discussions to check that appropriate strategies are in place to identify and support vulnerable students and/or to identify training needs at both school and individual level.
- Download the “Activity – Audit of Practice” document below and think about how you might use this to gain a better understanding about the identification and support for pupils using High Quality Teaching (HQT) Strategies.
- Complete the document through an activity such as:
i) Observing in a classroom
ii) During a conversation with a teacher or other member of staff about a pupil / group of pupils
ACTIVITY 2
The second document in this section is a poster for you and your colleagues to have as a prompt for thinking about HQT in your setting. “The Strategies
for SEND poster” can be downloaded and printed as you wish.
